Satoru Aoyama: Ancient Pixels

Tokyo-born, Chicago-educated Satoru Aoyama would be a photorealist painter, if his preferred medium weren't a needle and thread. His striking pictorial embroideries appear to be glossy photographs at first glance, but on a closer look, intricate layers of colorful stitches compose each extraordinarily detailed portrait and landscape. 2005's Easeful City, a cityscape of cotton and polyester embroidery on organza, is a vivid and sweeping view of urban apartment balconies, power lines, graffiti, and a big blue sky rendered stitch by stitch.
