Steppenwolf director Anna D. Shapiro has elicited profoundly felt performances from her ensemble that bring fresh life to well-worn roles. Disregarding race, her inventive casting here speaks to modern sensibilities, while the spare, soaring vertical set and traditional costumes retain the play's period framework. James Vincent Meredith is a dynamic force of nature as John Proctor, and Brian Murray mines captivating depths of anxious malevolence as Deputy Governor Danforth, who presides over the trials in The Crucible's explosive second half.
