William Pope.L, the self-proclaimed "friendliest black artist in America," first received recognition for belly-crawling along city streets, often dressed in costume, to draw attention to America's racial and economic divides. Spectacular performances, such as the literal consumption of the Wall Street Journal with milk, have largely defined Pope.L's career, but this exhibition focuses on a more tangible body of work: an ongoing series of Failure Drawings that reveal the artist at his most methodical, meditative, and formally engrossed.
