The often-bearded Seattle rock outfit Band of Horses walks a fine line between exploding power ballads and moody indie rock, a direct spawn of the post-grunge scene that's still thriving in the Northwest. The songs combine ear-shattering guitar licks with orchestral support, as lead singer Ben Bridwell's smooth voice climbs and dips with the haunting quality of a country-western singer from another planet. They're in the midst of the late-night talk-show circuit and come to Chicago supporting their new release, Cease to Begin.
