In the Realms of the Unreal
Sunday Nov 11, 2007 (1:30pm)
FREE with museum admission
If it weren't for the bohemian landlords who discovered his creations shortly before his death in 1972, reclusive Chicago artist Henry Darger might have slipped into the ether of forgotten history. Darger's intricately illustrated 15,000-page fantasy manuscript, The Story of the Vivian Girls, in What is Known as the Realms of the Unreal, of the Glandeco-Angelinian War Storm, Caused by the Child Slave Rebellion, has forever confirmed the troubled artist's place in the annals of outsider art. The phantasmagoric documentary In the Realms of the Unreal interweaves Darger's sad life story with desperately beautiful animated images of the hermaphroditic young girls, benevolent winged creatures, and torturous slave overlords that inhabit Darger's vividly rendered imaginary world.
