How the United States' ill-fated war in Iraq resonates in contemporary art — both in literal depictions and creeping undercurrents — will no doubt be a topic of consideration for decades to come. The Renaissance Society gets a head start with its timely group show Meanwhile in Baghdad…. The exhibition's nine international artists include Jenny Holzer, who contributes a 25-foot-long, diaristic oil painting called I Was in Baghdad Ochre Fade; echoing Duane Hanson's Vietnam-era sculptures, Jonathan Monk's boy-faced Deadman is a plaintive reminder of those coming home in cedar boxes; and Maryam Jafri's Seige of Khartoum poster series, created with clippings culled from newspapers as far back as the 19th century, uses historical evidence to argue that this war is yet another chapter in American imperialism.
