Chicago (1927) w/ accompanist Dave Drazin

In a rare screening of this 35mm print (courtesy of the UCLA Film and Television Archive), local jazz pianist and silent-film improvisation specialist David Drazin accompanies the original silent version of Roaring Twenties romp Chicago, directed by Frank Urson and starring Phyllis Haver as Roxy Hart. If you saw the glitzy, Bob Fosse-inspired remake, you know the ripped-from-the-headlines plot: playgirl murders her boyfriend and becomes an instant celebrity. But the draw here is the luminous performance by a blonde bombshell, the vintage cinematic feel, and the fact that this film — unlike its Oscar-winning 2002 counterpart — was actually shot right here in the Windy City.
