Few phrases have the power to strike fear in the hearts of pop lovers quite like "improvisational side project." For every Fripp and Eno, there seems to be a dozen October Factions. (Don't remember that Black Flag- and Descendents-affiliated noodling? Exactly.) Well, no one would confuse C. Spencer Yeh's droning violin or John Wiese's meticulous layers of noise for pop. Still, their expert improv and composition skills (not to mention the absurd decibel levels) will thrill even the uninitiated. Leave the po'-faced chin stroking at the door — Yeh and Wiese make experimental music with visceral grace.
