The Pipettes' road to semi-stardom started as a nostalgia trip: a purely retro exercise, in which three female singers and their crack rhythm-and-blues band, the Cassettes, took Phil Spector's Wall of Sound out for a spin. But RiotBecki, Gwenno, and Rosay brought enough girlish enthusiasm to the project to pull the band firmly into the present tense. (The songwriting, by in-house impresario Monster Boy, is nothing to sneeze at, either.) Expect perfectly simple pop songs — variations on the age-old theme of "growing up is hard, but kissing helps" — executed with precision and style. Bring your dancing shoes and get ready to shake your tail feather.
