Adding a bit of authentic Deutsche flavor to Chicago's holiday season, the four-week, outdoor Christkindlmarket — named for the historic winter shopping fairs of medieval Germany — showcases handicrafts, gifts, sweets, and entertainment from the Old Country. The bright and bustling downtown bazaar features rustic booths where vendors (many in traditional costume) peddle old-fashioned tin toys, Bavarian folk jewelry, handmade tree ornaments, one-of-a-kind nesting dolls, and ornate cuckoo clocks. Also enjoy hearty, mouth-warming treats like strudel, schnitzel, potato pancakes, and yummy gingerbreads. Try a stress-slaying cup of glühwein, a delicious mulled wine, and watch live glass-blowing and wood-carving demonstrations — or just take in the sights and sounds of the merry choirs, dance groups, and brass bands.
