Throne of Blood (aka Kumonosu-jô, which literally means "Spider Web Castle") is a loose adaptation of Shakespeare's Macbeth set in medieval Japan, with samurai warriors standing in for the play's feudal lords. Akira Kurosawa recasts the Bard's tale as highly stylized, Japanese noh theatre, juxtaposing traditional, mask-like makeup and symbolism-heavy drama. It's one of Kurosawa's best, and stars his favorite actor, Toshirô Mifune, in the leading role, and Isuzu Yamada as his ruthless wife.
