Chicago-based painter Jason Karolak's prodigious oil paintings evoke a feeling of intense satisfaction; he enthralls the viewer with vast, looping strokes in Untitled PO706, then considerably tightens the form for Untitled PO705. His gestural approach speaks to the physicality of the paint, implying a dangerous wonderland of color that lies in wait. Karolak's smaller, ink-on-paper works release the viewer from the larger paintings' intensity with simply drawn, monochrome surfaces. An essay from prolific local artist/curator Michelle Grabner accompanies the show.
