The 19th Annual Polish Film Festival promises Chicago — second only to Warsaw in our number of Polish-speaking residents — a two-week crash course in the Eastern European country's finest film offerings. The eclectic program of over 50 classic and contemporary features, shorts, and documentaries includes work from Poland's best and brightest filmmakers; a three-film retrospective of smoldering silent-screen goddess Pola Negri; and in-person appearances by directors Wieslaw Saniewski, Marek Tomasz Pawlowski, and Lukasz Palkowski, as well as famed cinematographer Pawel Edelman. Must-see films include Michal Rosa's melancholic What Sun Has Seen (2006); gangster love story The State Witness; Andrzej Wajda's groundbreaking Warsaw Uprising tale Kanal (1957); and the absolutely charming children's animated film Fantazy the Bear.
