The co-opting of underground, DIY, and punk culture by corporate America is nothing new, but what's more troubling to writer, zinester, and former Punk Planet (RIP) editor Anne Elizabeth Moore is the new era of collusion between independent artists eager to turn a buck and money-hungry ad agencies desperate to reach the elusive but oh-so-profitable youth market. In her brilliantly titled new book, Marketing the Unmarketable: Brandalism, Copyfighting, Mocketing, and the Erosion of Integrity, Moore examines the increasing acceptance of "selling out," the ubiquitous presence of indie rock in commercials, and Madison Avenue's street-savvy use of mock zines, guerilla-marketing campaigns, and fake blog-hype to woo cynical consumers. Tonight, the rabble-rousing Moore reads from her book, and a decidely subversive dance party follows.
