New Yorker music critic Alex Ross grew up listening to traditional classical music like Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert; in college, however, the burgeoning music snob developed an ear for chaotic avant-garde, obscure free jazz, and even the "noisier end of rock," like indie ass-kickers Sonic Youth. In his long-awaited first book, The Rest Is Noise: Listening to the 20th Century, Ross' democratic, all-inclusive love of the artform grounds 20th-century classical music in a wide political and cultural context that highlights its intersections with the pop, rock, and hip-hop realms. This afternoon, the blog-happy Ross discusses his book with WFMT critic-at-large Andrew Patner.
