Chicago Cultural Center, Studio Theater says…

The British faux documentary Death of a President raised eyebrows last year by imagining the assassination of the sitting American chief executive. The Right Brain Project's world premiere of Chalk takes a more conciliatory approach to dramatized regicide: it's set in the '20s, not the near future, and the victim is as fictional as his demise. This noirish mystery in the Dashiell Hammett tradition pits hardboiled gumshoe Eddie Rexford against the city of Chicago's most notorious cold case: the murder of mayor Leonard King. The committed performances and stylish costumes faithfully evoke a shady, corrupt era, but the arbitrary ending hits like a mickey in your scotch.
