Prefuse 73 is the brainchild of Scott Herren, who began his career in Atlanta's commercial studios. His tracks bridge the gap between a European preference for lounge music and the American appetite for hip-hop, as MC cameos fuse seamlessly with jazzy grooves. His new release, Preparations, features contributions by Battle's drummer John Stanier, experimental composer Tobias Lilja, and newly formed experimental New York band School of Seven Bells. From the album's hypnotic glyphs to its sensuous, '70s-influenced beats, Preparations blends the sounds of an urban landscape (rap, lounge, jazz, and downtempo) with steady, intoxicating electronica.
