Chris Burden is one of the more cringe-worthy performance artists of the '70s. His name is nearly synonymous with his 1971 performance Shoot, in which he instructed his assistant to shoot him in the arm at close range before a small gallery audience. Four years later at the MCA, he mounted a clock on the wall to signal the beginning of Doomed. Burden, after laying underneath a sheet of glass for 45 hours, ended the performance by smashing the clock and walking out of the museum, apparently displeased by an employee who had offered him a pitcher of water. By confronting the viewer with harmful elements, Burden's pieces point out the relational politics at stake between artist and audience, and test the limits of our social architecture.
