The 13-member Asiko Afrobeat ensemble may hail from New York, but their ass-shaking rhythms and bombastic, booty-twirling beats are strictly Nigerian. Taking its name from a Yoruba word which, loosely translated, means "it's time," the ensemble constructs jams — all shining trombone lines, funked-out saxophone, and propulsive congas — declaring that it's time to dance. Known for their party atmosphere and audience participation, the band's soulful, drum-fueled performances keep audiences sweat-soaked and happy. Tonight, Asiko make their Chicago debut.
