Shellac sit like standoffish brats in the annals of indie-rock greatness. Eschewing promoters, press, tours, and regular releases — their latest LP, Excellent Italian Greyhound, is their first output in seven years — they have nonetheless cultivated a crazed following. Since their inception in 1992 in Evanston (frontman Steve Albini was a Northwestern student before ascending to fame as a recording engineer), Shellac's cerebral, love-it-or-hate-it post-hardcore and noise-rock hybrid has influenced every aspect of the Chicago sound. Tonight kicks off their much-ballyhooed mini-residency at the Hideout, as Albini and company play six shows over four days, with a slew of excellent openers like Tight Phantomz and Quatre Tete.
