Smart Museum of Art says…

Self-taught artist Henry Darger was in many ways the archetypical mad genius, a recluse holed up in a tiny Chicago studio apartment with his art supplies, religious kitsch, and nearly a thousand balls of string. His life's work was an  exquisitely illustrated, 15,145-page, seven-volume tome, which was discovered by his landlord upon his death in the early '70s and later named In the Realms of the Unreal. This exhibition explores the artist's enigmatic creative process through selected collages, watercolor drawings, photographs of his workspace, and archival source materials like children's book illustrations and magazine clippings.
