All college students — except those persnickety English majors, of course — hate the MLA. The august language-and-literature organization's detail-obsessed Style Manual and exhaustive Handbook for Writers of Research Papers are considered the gold standard for academic writing in the humanities — and have driven more than a few students insane during finals. Today, get out your red pencil as the MLA celebrates its 123rd annual convention. The four-day scholarly extravaganza offers a multitude of workshops and forums covering everything from Renaissance literature to rhetorical theory. Off-site unaffiliated events abound during MLA conferences, but our favorite is the 50-poet marathon reading at the SAIC.
