French director Zabou Breitman investigates a different kind of love affair in The Man of My Life (L'homme de sa vie). The film subtly deploys a loving married couple, Frederic and Frederique (Bernard Campan and Lea Drucker), into emotional unrest upon the arrival of their gay neighbor, Hugo (Charles Berling). Hugo and Frederic form a fast friendship over the course of one evening, resulting in insurmountable sexual tension and innuendo, causing Frederique to suspect the nature of the men's bond. Devoid of climactic release, the triangulated relationship leaves the audience wondering what could have happened under altered circumstances, but only picturesque landscapes and gorgeous cinematic moments remain to satiate our desire.
