With his extensive industry resume, it's amazing that Jon Brion is still so indie. He has a long-standing relationship with director Paul Thomas Anderson, having scored most of his films (including Boogie Nights), and has produced everyone from Fiona Apple to Kanye West. Brion, however, seems most comfortable performing his own quiet rock. His songs sound vulnerable but are lively enough to hold a crowd's attention, and they have such strong narratives that they're really more like short stories set to a smorgasbord of instruments. Fans of the Magnolia (1999) soundtrack, which he produced, will feel right at home with his thoughtful and tender tunes.
