Bettye LaVette

Detroit-raised and Motown-hazed soul singer Bettye LaVette didn't get much notice until her 2005 "comeback" album, I've Got My Own Hell to Raise, produced by Joe Henry (Elvis Costello, Aimee Mann) and released on indie label Anti-. On her newest effort, The Scene of the Crime, LaVette delivers a powerful, wide-ranging album of covers (backed by alt-country band Drive by Truckers), including songs by Willie Nelson and Elton John, as well as originals like "Before the Money Came (The Battle of Bettye LaVette)," that chronicle the R&B veteran's late-blooming, but richly deserved, success.
