Girls on the Verge: Portraits of Adolescence
-
- Lauren Greenfield, Alli, Annie, Hannah, and Berit, All 13, before the First Big Party of the Seventh Grade, Edina, Minnesota, Courtesy Chronicle Books, © Lauren Greenfield/VII
Timidity and fearlessness; self-consciousness and bravado; naiveté and worldliness — all the dichotomies of female adolescence find expression in the Art Institute's photography exhibition Girls on the Verge. The show's highlights include Sally Mann's uncomfortable intimacy, Lauren Greenfield's startling realism, and Rineke Dijkstra's quiet tenderness. All the artists evoke the longing, vulnerability, confusion, and courage of young girls eyeing the world for the first time, discovering their nascent sexuality, and confronting the innocence they have not yet left behind.
Note: There is a discussion with Lauren Greenfield on Thur Jan 31 (6pm).
