The MIYUMI Project, fronted by Chicago avant-jazz bassist Tatsu Aoki, headline this mixed-media smorgasbord presented by Empty Bottle and SAIC. The concept behind Aoki's sprawling project, which explores Asian identity through traditional and modern instruments, may sound academic, but enjoying the mesmerizing, percussive sessions doesn't require any advanced study. Roommate share MIYUMI's restless, collaborative spirit (past contributors number in the double digits), but lean much more to pop. Lead by Kent Lambert, whose unassuming baritone masks some pretty acidic lyrics, Roommate deftly shift from agitated bedroom glitch (imagine a slightly calmer Xiu Xiu) to somber chamber music. The evening opens with media works from past and current SAIC students, so get there early for the full experience.
