Block Museum, Northwestern University says…

Alfred Hitchcock's legendary attention to detail in his mise en scene — literally, "setting the scene" within the cinematic frame through production design, lighting, blocking, and camera angles — is the feature presentation in this wide-ranging exhibition of storyboards, production studies, drawings and paintings from Hitchcock himself, as well as his numerous collaborators. Detailed pencil shot-layouts and mood-defining watercolors from early thrillers The 39 Steps (1935) and Saboteur (1942), and later Hollywood masterpieces like The Birds (1963) and Topaz (1969) are rare and fascinating glimpses into the inspirations, processes, and techniques of the great master of suspense. A film screening series is showing concurrently with the exhibition.
