Last year, Todd Haynes reimagined Bob Dylan's fabled 1965 Newport Folk Festival performance as a literal (i.e. gun-toting) assault. Dylan's chameleonic nature lends itself well to such mythologizing, even demanding it. But as its title promises, Murray Lerner's rock-doc The Other Side of the Mirror offers a comparatively pragmatic reappraisal, with Dylan's previous Newport gigs serving as a prologue to the '65 climax. While not as definitive as No Direction Home (2005) or as cinematically significant as Don't Look Back (1967), The Other Side of the Mirror stands out by presenting its legendary footage with the kind of journalistic distance that most Dylan screeds seem to lack.
