Film: Documentary Please Vote for Me (2007)

Kids can be so cruel, and nothing brings out cruelty like a competition — whether it's a race for popularity, kickball captain, or teacher's pet. Please Vote for Me follows three Chinese eight-year-olds as they jockey for the post of class monitor, pushed by parents and teachers who rival the most obsessive pageant moms and t-ball dads. The movie poses questions about why adults instill one-upsmanship so strongly in children, while presenting a fascinating slice of democratic life in China: a scramble for an elected position that commands conformity in the school.
