Film: Documentary The 11th Hour

In newbie directors Leila Conners Petersen and Nadia Conners' eco-doc The 11th Hour, audiences are presented with one option: change course, or face extinction. Narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio and an impressive coterie of activists, ecologists, and policy wonks — including Stephen Hawking, Sylvia Earle, and even Mikhail Gorbachev — the film ratchets up An Inconvenient Truth's urgency with unsettling images of ecological catastrophes and a convincing vision of impending planetary doom. Although the landfills, smokestacks, deforestation, and oil-slicked oceans are undeniably guilt-inducing, the film wisely intersperses its nauseating examples with real-world strategies that can (hopefully) wipe a few eco-footprints clean.
