Since the Telecommunications Act of 1996 deregulated media consolidation, the number of independent radio stations in Chicago has shrunk to a small, scrappy handful. Sure, Northwestern's WNUR, Chicago Public Radio, and the beloved WLUW (until June 2008, anyway) still broadcast their unique, community-minded voices, but corporate-controlled stations dominate the Chicago market with safe, homogenized content. Today, Radios Popularas — an organization dedicated to supporting community-produced independent radio in Latin America — preaches power to the people with a hands-on, how-to radio workshop. The event teaches participants the necessary tools for guerilla broadcasting, including the logistics of audio production and antennae building.
