Contemporary Lebanese society is increasingly torn between the influence of Western culture and traditional Islamic devotion. Rania Matar captures the poignant inner conflicts of Lebanese women with her new series of black-and-white photographs, with the Muslim hijab (veil) featured as a prominent symbol. Exploring social change within the women's Islamic community, she depicts her feminine subjects in situations of mourning, prayer, joy and everyday activities. Her piece I-Pod shows a young Muslim woman draped head to toe in black cloth and listening to the iconic white headphones, a primary example of the culture clash that Matar voices through her enigmatic and luminous photos.
