Rodney Graham's latest exhibition features both a kinetic op-art sculpture modeled after a Black Sabbath stage set and a room full of abstract impasto paintings — a seeming throwback to modernism. If this seems like a puzzling juxtaposition of forms, the ever-clever Graham gives us a hint that he's up to something: a giant photographic light-box depicts the artist wearing a suit in an Old West saloon as he dances above gunfire. As it turns out, trying on different artistic personas has long been integral to Graham's practice. He's rocked the Sabbath "opticon" onstage with his own band, and his foray into painting is another historical re-enactment of sorts (if also an homage-cum-satire).
