Cellist/composer/producer Arthur Russell embodied the cross-pollinating spirit of late-'70s New York, entertaining the avant-garde art world with his blissed-out dance jams. Club-goers dabbled in his live-life-to-the-fullest ideals at it-spots such as Danceteria, but — up until his AIDS-related death in 1992 — Russell personified that philosophy better than anyone else. Wild Combination, the first in-depth cinematic bio of Russell, features archival footage and interviews with family, fans, and contemporaries such as Philip Glass and Allen Ginsberg — to whom Russell described his productions as "Buddhist bubblegum music." A true transcendentalist, Russell played an integral role in the histories of both disco and post-punk. This full examination of the man is long overdue.
