Music: Rock/Pop Throw Me the Statue

As Throw Me the Statue, Seattle-bred multi-instrumentalist Scott Reitherman mixes uber-precious indie-pop with Casio tones and tightly wound orchestrations. Recently reissued on Secretly Canadian, his 2008 debut, Moonbeams, is a wildly mixed affair. At times, overloaded acoustic plucks buzz around buoyant speak-song and tinny beats reminiscent of early Guided By Voices; at others, bells and synth slink softly into wide, airy spaces. Comparisons to recent buzz-makers Vampire Weekend and Born Ruffians are unavoidable, but that's not necessarily a bad thing — there's always room in the AV club for another hyper-literate nerd-popper with something sweet to say.
