First performed in 2004, this adaptation of Rite of Spring is an expressionist dance-poem of modern barbarism. It's "simple" in the sense that the steps are mostly symbols of energies and emotions, eschewing strict stylistic categories. The score, however, is one of music's most notoriously challenging, and Heddy Maalem's production displays an ear for its complexities. Dressed in gallery white, the stage provides a clean background for video of Lagos, Nigeria, by documentarian Benoît Dervaux and for the costumes (essentially, swimwear in a searing neon palette). Fourteen dancers — native to nearly half as many West African nations — put their hearts into every moment, rising to the occasion of Igor Stravinsky's masterpiece.
