Should anyone need criteria by which to measure the success of emerging artists, one could investigate whether they had their first couple of solo exhibitions at White Columns, New York, and Tony Wight Gallery, Chicago. That's just what New York-based photographer Tamar Halpern has achieved with her distinctive, large-scale images. Halpern manually and digitally manipulates her photos, then juxtaposes the altered pieces and re-shoots them to create her final prints. This intense layering process yields images that exude contemporary attitude yet also make tangible references to modernist abstraction.
