Music Box Theatre says…

With the election just an Alaskan moose hair away, now seems like the perfect time to revisit Michael Ritchie's staggeringly prescient 1972 political pseudo-doc, The Candidate. Talk about life imitating art: Robert Redford is Bill McKay, a charismatic, relatively inexperienced Senate hopeful with barely an outside chance of winning. When he finally starts building traction, he's almost instantly beset by the hyperglare of the media and the nagging pressure to centralize his liberal platform. The film sometimes feels overly idealistic in the lofty, pre-Watergate demands it makes. Still, the final scene might just be the perfect capstone for campaign 2008 — the triumphant yet beleaguered McKay asks his manager, "What now?" Indeed.
