Anyone who has spent a week sick in bed or worked alone from home can attest that one really is the loneliest number. In Loneliness: Human Nature and the Need for Social Connection, John Cacioppo and William Patrick explain that extended periods of isolation can impact one's happiness and physical well-being adversely. Humans, they argue, are evolutionarily hardwired for social interaction, which helps us develop trust, relieve stress, and maintain good health. Meanwhile, loneliness can impair judgment, alter our perceptions, and dull our emotions. Tonight, Cacioppo discusses his book, the importance of meaningful social engagement (MySpace friends don't count), and different ways to combat loneliness in our increasingly insular digital age.
