Conventional wisdom has it that art and science don't get along. For years, artists/twins Mike and Doug Starn have been gracefully proving that notion wrong. Their recent photographs of individual snowflakes are utterly gorgeous, almost to the point of preciousness, but above all they're technical marvels. The artists spent years hammering out the logistics — microscopic lenses, plasma-emitting lights, snowstorm photo sessions — to capture the flakes during their fleeting existence. Few arrive fully intact, so their beauty has a poignant imperfection. Joining this wintry mix are selections from the Starns' Gravity of Light series, an investigation of light and darkness starring moths and skeletal leaves.
