Gene Siskel Film Center says…

A revenge fantasy with an emphasis on the fantastical, Jean Vigo's comic-surrealist classic Zero for Conduct is the alpha point for the "rebel schoolboy" genre. It paved the way for The 400 Blows (1959) and If… (1968), but you can also sense Vigo's anarchic spirit in the blow-up-the-school finales of Heathers (1989) and even Rock 'n' Roll High School (1979). Also screening is Frank Borzage's sadly unavailable-on-DVD Man's Castle. Spencer Tracy and Loretta Young star in this tough-minded (for 1933 Hollywood, at least) vision of premarital pregnancy at the height of Depression-era hard times.
