Doc Films says…

For all their celebration of seedy down-and-outs and urban grime, many classic film noirs are visually sumptuous (if not downright baroque) affairs. Not so with Detour. Edgar G. Ulmer's 1945 no-budget cult fave — shot in less than a week — features shoddy rear projection and barest-bones set design. The shoestring production proves the ideal fit for the tale of a bullshitting drifter (Tom Neal) led further into doom by a scheming hitchhiker (Ann Savage, the most fatalistic of all femmes fatale).  Barely an hour long, it's a warts-and-all masterpiece — the film's various "flaws" only add to its odd authenticity.
