Don't let the name fool you. At 96, Louise Bourgeois is still the diametric opposite of middle-class politesse and mass-produced good taste. Her flamboyant mix of abstract shapes and giant natural forms (notably the spiders of Maman) put her among the top sculptors of the latter 20th century. The Spider, the Mistress and the Tangerine examines how the people and events of her childhood (her domineering mother, her father's affair with the sitter) continue to inform her pieces, shedding light on the sexual undercurrents beneath the seemingly innocuous veneers. When you taste the kiss of the Spider Woman, it still feels like you've been hit.
