Released, weighted dancing, written in boldface and arranged into giant shapes, reigns as the style of the moment, yet Toru Shimazaki finds a way to make it feel new. He makes big physical decisions from moment to moment, avoids the trap of detail, and understands the drama inherent in the difficult. His tender side emerges in duets, and Fold, his second premiere for Hubbard Street, goes deeper in this direction with its forays into incredible speed. Alejandro Cerrudo's Extremely Close is playful, unpredictable, and filled with seriously gorgeous movement, and Ohad Naharin's piece, Minus 16 is, simply put, required viewing.
