Though it's cited as a seminal example of installation art, Marcel Broodthaers imagined his late work Décor: A Conquest (1975) as both film set and museum invasion. With an avowed theme of "the relationship between war and comfort," the work comprises two period rooms filled with weaponry, lounge seating, and assorted novelties that signify imperialism or battle. It's a hushed tableau in which war becomes an inert shadow — an abstraction within a closed aesthetic system. Although recent presentations of Décor: A Conquest lack the subtext of its original exhibition, the work continues to sound out historical and institutional processes in vital ways.
