Gallery 400 says…

Sound and visual artist Steve Roden has an inquisitive mind and a yen for self-designed systems that translate one form into another. He's turned classical-music scores into vibrant paintings where notes dictate color and shape, and explored Goethe's notion of architecture as "frozen music" in his sculptures. Roden's many sound installations, meanwhile, have drawn on Arthur Rimbaud's color equivalents for our vowels, the Adler Planetarium's 1940s list of star names, and amateur recordings of space transmissions, among other sources. He's even tackled the daunting task of responding to one of James Turrell's phenomenological skyspaces, subtly introducing what he describes as "sound dust."
