A couple years back, any critics worth their listophilia (and there are many) found space among their year-end bests for Alison Bechdel's heartbreaking and minutely illustrated "tragicomic" Fun Home. However, Bechdel had been cultivating a devoted following long before, thanks mainly to the trailblazing comic strip Dykes to Watch Out For. The new compendium Essential Dykes plucks the best of the strip's 20-plus years, along with 60 never-before-published pieces. The characters and situations are primarily (you guessed it) Sapphic in nature, but Bechdel's eye for emotional detail and her deep literary knowledge work universally. A must for Fun Home newbies and decades-long disciples alike.
