A man arrives in a run-down office, finds The Great Gatsby on his desk, and reads the whole book aloud, cover to cover, while waiting for someone to come fix his computer. With this spare framework and a six-hour running time, Gatz sounds like a stiff joke at the viewer's expense; however, Elevator Repair Service's inspired performance is far from a slog. The banal backdrop of office life starts to parallel the novel's text in peculiar ways, while the initial awkwardness evolves into a mesmerizing experience. A daring reinterpretation of what an adaptation should be, this is Fitzgerald's classic — and perhaps theatre itself — like you've never known it before.
