Given its terminally earnest nature and willingness to establish rules of conduct, goth was destined to eventually lapse into self-parody. Sisters of Mercy were as guilty as any party — the epic choral intro on "This Corrosion" (still their most enduring moment) is the definition of over-the-top. But there was always something brave about mastermind Andrew Eldritch's embrace of Big Dumb Rock. Rigid, mega-produced dance dirges like "Temple of Love" had no time for irony — they were too busy embracing metal's ridiculousness and classic rock's bluster. Fellow Leeds post-punkers Gang of Four and Delta 5 get endless props for their self-aware conceptualism. But, by stubbornly resisting that knowing wink, Sisters of Mercy deserve those kudos just the same.
